The term "bulldog" includes several dog breeds recognized and not recognized by the FCI. The most popular of them are probably the ones French Bulldog and the English Bulldog. The French and the English Bulldog - Image: Shutterstock / WilleeCole Photography

Bulldogs are subordinated to the Molossians - massive, muscular and strong types of dogs. They belong to the small to medium-sized representatives of this group and were originally bred to take on animal fights with bulls. In old breeding lines, their physical prerequisites allowed them to pack the much larger animals and pull them to the ground.

Today the nature and stature of the bulldog in breeding have changed a lot. Well-known and recognized by the FCI, such as the French Bulldog and the English Bulldog have become popular, peaceful and affectionate family dogs.

French Bulldog and English Bulldog

With its cute bat ears and friendly, funny character, the French Bulldog is a particularly popular representative among the Bulldogs and is often kept as a family and companion dog. The breed only grows to a weight of eight to 14 kilograms and fans and keepers love it for its playful, bright character. The English Bulldog is significantly bulky, has a friendly, easy to train and sometimes somewhat stubborn nature.

These bulldogs are not recognized by the FCI

The rare and unrecognized bulldog species include the following dogs: The American Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog, the American Bulldog, which is listed in many regions throughout Germany, and the Australian Bulldog.

The Catahoula Bulldog is an American cross between the American Bulldog and the Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog and is very rare. Other less well-known dog breeds include the Continental -, the Leavitt -, the Renascence - and the Victorian Bulldog. Not to be forgotten is also the Olde English Bulldog, a dog breed from the USA that was bred with the aim of giving the English Bulldog, which is in part heavily bred, a healthier appearance.
